About Valerie

Valerie Mathews is an artist based in Sydney, whose style interweaves abstract and impressionist styles, with a vibrant use of colour and texture to reflect the beauty of the world around us.

Valerie is a largely self-taught artist who began painting commissions of large-scale wall murals at an early age.  Born in London, England, she studied life-drawing part-time at Hertfordshire College of Art, before completing her Bachelor of Science degree and moving into a corporate finance and technology career.  She has continued to paint commissions, and has recently increased her focus on painting collections for sale.

Living on the Northern Beaches in Sydney, with her husband, two teenage boys and dog, she paints most days out of her home studio, taking inspiration from the beauty of walking the local beaches and bushland.

Her first solo exhibition was held in Comber St Studios, Paddington, Sydney in September 2024.

“Painting for me is a complete immersion, where time stops and I simply get lost in another world”

Valerie's artistic philosophy is to capture the spirit of life, reflecting personal moments and connections.

Her art embraces the subject of nature, women and family and is inspired by the Australian landscape and how people interact with nature, immersing the viewer in the elements - from scattering clouds, the spray of the sea, falling rain, water reflections and the filtering of light as it changes through the day.

The works are primarily Acrylic or Oil on gallery wrapped canvas.  Her process often begins with the use of ink to draw and create fluid designs that emerge as the focal point of the artwork, juxtaposing soft, ethereal brushstrokes with vibrant, energetic colour and texture that invites viewers to engage on both a visual and emotional level.
