Valerie Mathews – REFLECTIONS

This body of work interweaves abstract and impressionist styles, with a vibrant use of colour and texture to reflect the beauty of the world around us.  It embraces the subject of nature, women and family.  Inspired by the Australian landscape and how people interact with nature, the viewer is immersed in the elements -  from scattering clouds, the spray of the sea, falling rain, water reflections and the filtering of light as it changes through the day.

Close up painting of surf and waves

So many distractions and noise enter our lives through social media, phone, tik tok, tv, etc….. It’s not often in this busy world that there is silence and time to notice the moments of life.  My artworks are inspired by taking time and noticing the world around us and everyday experiences.  I wanted to capture the beauty of getting out and immersing in nature, from the quiet ripples of the water and rustle of the trees to the laughter and fun of connecting with family and friends.

I love the changing light of the day, in early morning as the sun comes up, through the vibrant heat of the day, and late into the afternoon when a radiant glow throws soft shadows and reflections across the garden.

I paint with a vibrant colour palette of aquas, green, purple and gold to capture the natural surroundings, and to immerse beauty into people’s homes. I hope my art allows for a break in the busyness of life; to prompt people to stop for a moment and be mindful and feel a sense of calm, where they ‘fall into’ the picture and get lost in the story.

Painting for me is a complete immersion, and I am incredibly grateful to be spend more time creating art.
